2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of this special and meaningful movie. With the endless help of Robert A. Nowotny, the Producer, and several of the cast members -- especially Norbert Weisser, Leigh Lombardi, Dan Perrett and Jerry Nelson -- I am very pleased to present a 98-page digital scrapbook-style tribute to this movie commemorating this special occasion. This would not have been possible without them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I also want to extend my deepest thanks to Max Wiedmer, Chris Neame, Lynda Nowotny, Joel Kauffmann, Josue Hirschler and Michael Bucher for their time, valuable photos and input, along with the full support of Executive Producer D. Michael Hostetler and Associate Producer Liza Vann. The fact that everyone was so enthusiastic about being involved in this tribute twenty years after working on the film -- especially with me being an outsider -- speaks volumes about their depth of character and proves just how special everyone is.

The Radicals webpage within this site tells of the movie, but this tribute expands on that and tells the story of beautiful countries and locations, warm-hearted and hospitable hosts, volunteers who spent countless hours donating their time and talent for no pay, and speaks of a cast and crew dedicated to this film and their craft -- certainly no one involved in this movie did it for the money (or lack thereof), and that includes the entire cast and crew, right down to the last carpenter and production assistant. And, what started out over a year ago as just a Special Feature on this website dedicated to Norbert, turned out to be so much bigger than that -- a tribute to a wonderful movie and an exceptional group of very talented and wonderful individuals.

Please enjoy your visit as you explore the pages of this photo journal retrospective. You will find interesting trivia, funny outtakes, touching tributes and so much more. Come back often!  Don't worry if you have to leave the site before you are done -- the pages of the scrapbook can be easily bookmarked for future reference.

These are just a few of the pages you will find within this scrapbook. All of these preview images are thumbnails. Click on any of them to view them larger.
Note: the actual pages for the digital book measure 8.5x11" -- the images displayed on this page will be at a much smaller resolution.
Associate Producer Liza Vann, who played Countess Von Zollern, is seen here wearing a museum piece gown that the production team was allowed to use for one day -- provided they insured it for $100,000 and that no alterations were made. Luckily the gown fit her perfectly. The scene in the movie where she is wearing it does no justice to this amazing creation whatsoever.

Robert Nowotny (top), Mark Lenard (lower r), Jim Bowman and Joel Kauffman (lower l). These are examples of some of the costumes. Trivia note: Robert says his first grey hair appeared during filming and then turned completely grey just after completing the movie... he swears there is a correlation.

Raul Carrera, Mark Lenard and Robert Nowotny preparing for the torture scene. Pay particular attention to Robert's comments about this foul place -- it was not a pleasant experience to shoot here! (He never said if they just left him hanging there after they were done filming for the day...)

More shots of the jail cells. Notice the crew is wearing face masks while they are working in this location. Leigh Lombardi said it was so cold in these cells that their hands were like ice, and their lips so cold they could barely speak or kiss.

Michael Bucher was the brilliant and
gifted cinematographer for this movie.
Michael won the 1990 CINE Golden Eagle award for his exceptional work on this film. When you watch this movie, pay particular attention to the warmth of the lighting in Michael and Margaretha's scenes as well as the wonderful lighting used throughout the interior shots.

Norbert had a wonderful story about working with Mark as told in the above page. Even though they were adversaries in the movie, there was a very cordial working relationship between them.

Mark Lenard drew tremendous respect from the cast and crew because of his professional manner. As Robert Nowotny explains, he was seen as "The Elder Statesman" on the set. There will be a lot more of this tribute to him in the final scrapbook - everyone had such nice things to say about him.

Isn't this an absolutely amazing still of Christopher Neame? Just look at those eyes. He has the miraculous ability to give the most intense look...

The note is a very warm and heartfelt letter that he sent in as a contribution to this project. Thank you very much, Chris!

Robert Nowotny sent me the headshots he had that were part of his files. At first I wasn't sure what to do with them, but then this idea struck me. Have you ever seen a more attractive group of people anywhere?
I think not. I definitely had to turn down the heat in my office while I was working on this... Yeah, the women are stunning, but the men are just incredibly handsome!

Viewing The Digital Scrapbook

This scrapbook was created using a digital flipbook system. The pages will turn exactly like a book once the file is completely loaded. (If you see a blank page, it should load relatively quickly.) You can click on any page near the left or right margin to turn the page forward or backwards. The resolution of the book will automatically adjust to fit your screen.

I suggest that you download the Flipbook Viewer first, then click on the link to view the book. The Flipbook Viewer is similar to the Adobe Acrobat reader. There is no spyware or malware associated with this download.

There are two links: PC (runs on XP, Vista and System 7) and Mac.
     - - Select the appropriate viewer.

     - - Install the application using the screen prompts.
     - - Return to this screen and click on this link:

Here are some screenshots of what you will see during the viewing of this digital scrapbook.

Figure 2. You will see this screen after the book loads.
Figure 4.You can bookmark pages so you can find your place easily. Multiple book-marks can be quickly added or removed.

Please allow ample time for this book to load. This is a very large file. If you have problems with the FlipViewer -- either download or loading problems -- here is an alternate version of the scrapbook. The display size is locked for this version, and the individual pages take longer to load. Also, be aware that it does not display as elegantly as the Flipbook style book. However, given that there was an occasional problem with some of the viewers testing this, I wanted to make sure there was an alternate available. Flash Payer is required, but no software download is necessary.

Most problems encountered with the Flipviewer are due to not allowing sufficient time for the book to completely load -- usually around 1 or 2 minutes with a broadband connection. Also, some viewers say that for the Mac version that this works  better with 10.4 or 10.5 as the OS instead of the new 10.6.
