Riders of the Purple Sage

Hopefully I will be able to feature more of Norbert's work on these pages in the near future, so check back often. I am always looking for additional material to include here.

Norbert is cold-hearted and calculating as Deacon Tull in this adaptation of a Zane Grey western. He has been attempting to convince an heiress with rich holdings of land and cattle to marry him. She does not love him and knows he only wants her for her land. A gunman, Lassiter, comes into the area and wins her trust and affection instead. Deacon Tull and other members of his religious sect stop at nothing to get what they want, including bloodshed and murder. Tull and others of the sect are killed as they attempt to gain the upper hand.

The incredibly talented husband and wife team of Ed Harris (Lassiter) and Amy Madigan (heiress Jane Withersteen) are the stars and executive producers of this wonderful movie. Sadly it is not available on DVD, but there are limited VHS copies available on Amazon.com.

The Road to Wellville

So what can I say about the incredibly gifted hands of Dr. Spitzvogel in this movie that is a parody of the early health crazes in the beginning of the 20th century? Norbert plays a doctor specializing in, how shall I say --"therapeutic massage to relieve tension in women" a they actually used to call it. (This is actually a former medical profession that is no longer being practiced.) The movie centers around real-life Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (played by Anthony Hopkins) who runs an up-scale health facility in Battle Creek, Michigan, and touts the benefits of vegetarianism, exercise and laughing to purge the polluted body. He believes sex drains the body of vital fluids and energy, and he ensures that husbands and wives are kept separate during their stay. Of course, the women find a way around being neglected, and joyfully end up in the talented hands of Dr. Spitzvogel, who has a massage practice set up away from Kellogg's health facility.

Dr. Spitzvogel sings a beautiful song to Eleanor Lightbody (Bridget Fonda) as he massages her tensions away -- Der Lindenbaum, a poem by Wilhelm Muller about the linden tree. The poem was set to music by Schubert 1827.

This is Norbert's very first credited television appearance. He plays Gurd, a member of a band. The Hardy Boys, as played by Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson, are in Europe investigating the disappearance of their father who was there attempting to solve an art theft ring. They hook up with a musical trio in order to gain access to Dracula's Castle where a costume ball/rock concert is being held. Lorne Greene has the role of a Romanian Inspector, but he is really an art thief posing as Dracula. Composer and singer Paul Williams also appears as the headline act at the castle.

Northern Exposure

Norbert has the role of Reinhart, a saloon owner proudly serving up Schnaps and beaver stew, in this season three episode of Northern Exposure from 1992 entitled Three Amigos. Joanna Cassidy is the other guest star in this episode in the role of Solvang Planey. She is in the process of burying her husband of three years. She doesn't let that stop her from taking up with Reinhart at a moment's notice when she meets him, and doesn't waste any time letting him know she is interested in him -- or any man for that matter -- since she isn't too particular. Reinhart is only too happy to oblige her since his wife has recently run off. Norbert only makes a brief appearance in this episode .
